(inaugural) Match Slapper: Keano

At Stumps Squad: Nick & Richo

Until such time as the Skipper writes the official account, herewith a summary of what was a new beginning for the troublesomely named ChorusVerseVerse - what song starts with a chorus? 'I Shot the Sheriff' I guess, but I cant think of another - Game 1 for Pitchslap.

Richo’s task to assemble a side was not without issue. With flights out of New Zealand heavily booked as always, we were without the services of our pakeha. Cotton has returned to Bleak City while appallingly Ivan is now yet another fine and proud Australian lacerated by a Sting-ray (that’s it you carnts, it’s war). Despite his failure to answer the call on previous occasions, Cowell was pardoned to debut along with Nick and Faze.

My memory being what it is, I perhaps have a hazy recollection of there also being only 6 players on the other team.

Despite the rich vein of form we took into the break, our opponents The Floggers afforded us a 25 run handicap and chose to have a bat.

Highlights in the field necessarily require mention of Faze’s wicket-taking mystery ball to centre operator Tim and, of course, Keano’s continued ownership of the on-side backcourt. Two catches particularly making like an immovable object. Such catching permits continued development of his unique between the legs flick before we all tell him to quit it and throw the fucken thing.

Richo and Nick's selection in the ‘At Stumps’ squad, also with reference to the batting figures above, suggest they both bowled superbly. In the end the Floggers failed to reach the hundred, posting a gettable 98.

The surprisingly circumspect opening combination of Keano and Lenno provided yet another stable platform. Nick and Faze’s expressive style struggled against some impressive fielding, before Cowell and the skipper applied the required steady hand. John and yours truly were able to choose the bowlers we had to face. Rather than preying on the egos of at least one of our more fancied opponents we (OK it was primarily my doing) instead chose to plunder the worst on offer, making our contribution less impressive than it may otherwise have been.

One from one for Pitchslap, a fine birthday present for the skipper.

A fine appraisal of the night gLOVE. A great start to the season. Perhaps,(dare I say it), points we might not have got otherwise if they had had 8. But Fuck it, a win is a win.Top effort from Keano in the field. Inspirational and totally deserving of the Match Slapper Trophy. Well Done boys. Skip.
